Description |
Page three of the Michael Lally scrapbook features photos of a crowd of civilians watching a parade in San Francisco, soldiers mounted on horses, a US Navy rigid airship flying overhead, soldiers at Fort Dix in New Jersey, and a hula performance in Hawai'i. The Navy only operated a few rigid airships in the 1930s, including the USS Akron and the USS Macon. It is possible this photo is of one of these airships, but it is difficult to tell without a visible name or more specific date (Akron crashed in April of 1933). This scrapbook was made by Michael Lally, an Irish immigrant, who served in the 76th Field Artillery (FA) from 1931 to 1934. The scrapbook documents the Lally's time in Monterey, San Francisco, Hawai'i, and more with the 76th FA. |
