Description |
The scrapbook of Master Sergeant Vico L. DeLaurenti documents the service of a US Army cryptocraphic technican with the 25th Signal Center Detachment in the China Theater of Operations, between February 1945 and January 1946. The 25th Signal Center Detachment was responsible to encode and decode messages during the South China Campaign and was staffed by cryptographic linguists trained in the Chinese language. DeLaurenti himself spent nine months learning Chinese through the Army Special Training Program (ASTP) at the University of Washington prior to his deployment. M. Sgt. DeLaurenti's scrapbook captures both military and civilian imagery. These include other members of his unit, a few photographs of the 25th Signal Center Detachment headquarters, aerial and streets scenes in Shanghai, Nanking, and Canton, as well as Republic of China military forces, US Lend Lease Program military aircraft, a Japanese forces surrender ceremony, and Japanese General Tanaka. |
