Description |
This page of the Turner scrapbook features portraits of soldiers who are likely in the 161st Field Artillery Band in Emporia, Kansas, as many of their names are noted as musicians on other scrapbook pages. There are captions under the portraits with the name, rank, and hometown of the soldiers. The names include: Rudolph G. Jungst, Charles H. Thurber, Harley P. Gover, Jack R. Barker, Robert M. Johnson, and Elmer J. Micek. This scrapbook documents the wartime experience of Joseph Earl Turner, a jazz musician and golf instructor, who enlisted from Emporia, Kansas, in the US Army on 23 December 1940. Beginning as a private, Turner rose quickly in rank before separating from service on 7 December 1945 as a Technical Sergeant. He served in the 161st and the 195th Field Artillery bands and was stationed at bases in Kansas and California, including at San Luis Obispo and Fort Ord. |
