Description |
Featured in the Turner scrapbook, this photo is of soldiers playing their musical instruments in a parade formation. It is likely these soldiers are in the 161st or 195th Field Artillery band. The caption beneath the picture on the page reads "Mr. Stinson" and comparing to portraits in earlier scrapbook pages, the man smiling at the camera looks like Ner A. Stinson, a Staff Sergeant, who is from Emporia, Kansas. This scrapbook documents the wartime experience of Joseph Earl Turner, a jazz musician and golf instructor, who enlisted from Emporia, Kansas, in the US Army on 23 December 1940. Beginning as a private, Turner rose quickly in rank before separating from service on 7 December 1945 as a Technical Sergeant. He served in the 161st and the 195th Field Artillery bands and was stationed at bases in Kansas and California, including at San Luis Obispo and Fort Ord. |
