This page from the Turner scrapbook features a photo of what is likely the 195th Field Artillery band performing, possibly in the Fort Ord area. First names of some of the soldiers are on their music stands including Bill, Dick, Al, and Des. Joseph E. Turner is pictured in the back row, second from left. This scrapbook documents the wartime experience of Joseph Earl Turner, a jazz musician and golf instructor, who enlisted from Emporia, Kansas, in the US Army on 23 December 1940. Beginning as a private, Turner rose quickly in rank before separating from service on 7 December 1945 as a Technical Sergeant. He served in the 161st and the 195th Field Artillery bands and was stationed at bases in Kansas and California, including at San Luis Obispo and Fort Ord. |
