This collections contains information about Alexander Trembovelsky, an instructor who taught Russian for the Army Language School and retired after the creation of the Defense Language Institute. The colleciton includes information about Trembovelsky's service with the White Russian Army. Most of the papers in the collection are in Russian. Alexander Trembovelsky was born on August 8, 1898 in the village of Trembovel on his family estate that had been given to his ancestors by the Tsar. Mr. Trembovelsky graduated from military school, and during the Russian Revolution he was a Captain of a tank division of the White Russian Army. He later moved to Belgrade, worked in Germany for Germans during World War II, and immigrated to the United States in 1949. In January 1952, Trembovelsky began working at the Army Language School as a Russian Instructor in the East Slavic Division; he retired in 1967 from DLI. Following retirement Trembovelsky resided in Santa Barbara, CA. He passed away in 1985. |
