This box of the1987 Command History Collection contains the periodical Defense 87, the GLOBE newspaper, the Foreign Language Training Resource Guide, the General Officer Steering Committee 1987 publication, and the FY 87 -FY 97 Long Range Plan. In the periodical, Defense 87, the missions of the unified commands and specified commands are described. The unified commands are composed of US combat forces from two or more services, have broad and continuing missions, and are usually organized on a geographical basis. The following commands are included: US Pacific Command, US European Command, US Southern Command, US Atlantic Command, US Central Command, US Special Operations Command, US Space Command, and US Transportation Command. Whereas Specified Commands are composed of US combat forces, usually from a single service, are organized on a functional basis and have a broad and continuing mission. The two specific commands are the Strategic Air Command and the Forces Command. Editions of the GLOBE from May to December 1987 include current events at the DLI such as Language Day, the Commandant's Honor Roll, Awards, and changes of command. One of the issues focused on the DLI's forty-sixth anniversary. The Foreign Language Training Resource Guide, Project Babel, 1987 was developed to provide all training officers and commanders with information concerning the source of language training and materials. It is a compendium of language training opportunities available from civilian, military and private institutions that could provide educational materials such as texts, novels, cassettes, and computer programs. The General Officer Steering Committee 1987 publication includes the DLI's recent initiatives to improve instruction such as faculty training, faculty performance standards, and improving the instructional program. It also contains information papers by the armed forces regarding the retention of trained linguists. Included are the resumes and biographies of the General Officer Steering Committee principals. DLI's FY 87 -FY 97 Long Range Plan was developed to support the TRADOC purpose of preparing the Army for the future. It includes DLI's mission to: provide foreign language instruction in support of national security requirements; support and evaluate command language programs worldwide; and administer a worldwide standard test and evaluation system. Long term goals include providing quality soldiers to field commanders through DLI's focus on ensuring achievement, maintenance and enrichment of foreign language proficiency by military linguists.
