This box of the Studies and Reports Collection contains documents related to studies and thesis on foreign language instruction in the Army and within the Department of Defense. Specific reports and studies include Language Training for the Officer Corps - An Appraisal, Officer Foreign Language Study, and Department of Defense Study of Foreign Language Training. Also included are lectures given by Professor Mario Pei as Linguistic Consultant to the Army Language School on the subject of The History of Linguistic Science, Grammatical Structure, Classification of Languages, etc. Professor Mario Pei's 1960 report to the Commandant on the Army Language School includes an outline of his experiences while being enrolled as a student in Chinese Mandarin. Congressional Testimony on the Defense Language School includes questions directed to the four Services concerning the overall need for foreign language training, utilization of trained linguists, and identification and validity of requirements. The 1964 DoD study of foreign language training was prepared by the Director and staff of the Defense Language Institute. The purpose of which was to study the quantity and quality of foreign language training provided to the Department of Defense personnel and their dependents and develop recommendations for reaching the number of personnel and achieving the degree of excellence required. The study includes a compilation of quantitative, qualitative, and cost statistical data gathered from Defense departments, as well as addresses the full time mission-required foreign language program operated by DLI. The date range of these records is 1960-1972. |
