This box of the Studies and Reports Collection contains documents regarding various studies related to language training, foreign language capabilities, and student thesis on predictions of graduation, effects of gender on attrition, and proficiency objectives. The Arthur thesis on the effect of gender of attrition at DLIFLC explores the explanation for the 7 percent higher rate of attrition than of males. Student data is examined to determine factors with a significant impact on attrition, with particular emphasis on gender. The 1997 Anderson thesis studies and analyzes attrition from the basic language courses in an attempt to clarify an observed increase in attrition for fiscal years 1994 to 1996. Analysis of attrition from four specific languages of varying difficulty and the basic Spanish course was performed using binary tree classification. DLIFLC management was interested in evaluating the effect of influx of previously attrited students had on the attrition from the basic Spanish course. Marchant's 1998 thesis on the comparison of proficiency objectives, performance objectives, and success at follow-on training aims to determine how the performance objective scores relate to success on the DLPT and how the combination of DLPT and performance objective tests might relate to follow-on training at Goodfellow Air Force Base. The 1999 DeRamus thesis on predicting the proficiency of Arabic and Persian linguists trained at DLIFLC seeks to determine how major program tests, semester GPAs, and cumulative skill GPAs in the Arabic and Persian language departments relate to success on the DLPT. The results of this study will assist the schools deans within these language departments in interpreting the meaning of program tests, semester GPAs, and cumulative skills GPAs when making decisions about attrition and academic performance. The date range of these records is 1996-2004. |
