This collection contains records (including newspaper articles, and documents) regarding the development of the Vietnamese language department at the ALS and DLIFLC.
Included are historical studies written by Dr. James McNaughton, research on the subject of Vietnamese language training, training information beginning with the 1960s and thru the 1980s, historical information regarding the number of Vietnamese language students killed during the Vietnam War, curriculum of the Vietnamese Basic and Intermediate Course materials including syllabi, lectures, course exercises, tests and quizzes, materials realted to the history and culture of Vietnam, Defense Language Proficency (DLPT) practice tests and related material, Oral Proficency Interview (OPI) material, faculty professional development materials, and administrative records. Of particular note is course materials for a special language course taught through DLI for a police department in Texas that was fighting Vietnamese gangs.
Outside of paper records, this collection also includes placards for use to show students and to form Vietnamese sounds and the differences between modern and classic Vietnamese, pictures of Vietnam and its culture, a few language cassette tapes, and Vietnamese course books.
The date range of the documents in this collection is 1957 to 2023.
