This box of the Studies and Reports Collection contains documents related to the Army Linguist Personnel Study (ALPS). The purpose of ALPS was to investigate the Army's linguist needs and programs in order to develop recommendations for new programs and procedures or changes to old programs so that national, DOD, and Army linguist requirements are met. Chapters include the role of language in war, utilization of indigenous linguists, management of resources, training, recruiting, and retention. The Army programmed language instruction at DLI and FSI (Foreign Service Institute) on the basis of projected requirements submitted by Army Staff agencies, major commands and field operating agencies. This study evaluated the present (at that time) status of Army Linguist Programs and the management of linguist assets for active and reserve units. This study also developed recommendations for necessary changes or initiatives in organizational, regulatory, statutory, training, or managerial matters to meet the Army's need FY 76-78;FY 79 and beyond linguist requirements. A 1978 information paper on the Army Linguist Problem report written by the GAO notes the status of the ALPS recommendations, and includes a listing of the significant changes to be made based on recommendations.
