Scope & Content |
This box of the Studies and Reports Collection contains documents related to studies and thesis on foreign language instruction in the Army and within the Department of Defense. Specific subjects addressed include the Department of Defense Study of Foreign Language Training, Department of the Army Board's Review of Army Officer Schools, Language Training of U.S. Government Dependents, and the Staff Study on Southeast Asia Language Training Requirements. The subject of language training for military dependents is addressed in several memos and correspondence which outline the increased need for foreign language training amongst dependents for various reasons. A 1964 response to a memo recommends that agencies concerned seek liberalization of legislative authority or new legislation as appropriate, and funds to provide a modest increase in assignment-related language training for wives at Government expense. A 1966 staff study on Southeast Asia Language Training Requirements includes a memo on Vietnamese language training with regards to increased requirements placed upon DLI. It is noted that the shortage of qualified instructors and lack of adequate classroom and troop accommodations are serious issues for DLI. The recommendation made it to conduct the training at Biggs AFB, El Paso Texas. Contracts with universities were also considered to handle the increased language load. Correspondence on this matter between the Director of the DLI Washington Branch and the DLI Commandant address the issues of space as well. The date range of these records is 1964-1965. |
