Scope & Content |
This box of the Studies and Reports Collection contains documents regarding the overall subject of the Military Instruction Linguist problem. Specific studies and documents consist of recommendations on input to the VCSA briefing on MI linguist problem, the TRADOC Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center Management Study, Language Needs Assessment, and a memo on how Goodfellow Air Force Bases graduates did at DLI. Most of the surveys and reports are not specific to DLIFLC, but language needs in general. A 1981 survey of Foreign Languages and Area Specialists Assets and Requirements conducted by the Defense Intelligence Agency was intended to determine current and projected requirements/assets for foreign languages and area studies expertise among the Services and agencies within the General Defense Intelligence Program and document the status of record-keeping in these Services and Agencies in terms of reliability and ready access to expertise in times of international crisis. An assessment was conducted of student attitudes and impressions in the use of Suggestopedia as a learning methodology in the teaching of a foreign language. The evaluation was conducted in the Russian basic course, Russian School, DLIFLC during the first through tenth weeks of the 47-week basic course. The resulting study and report consists of evaluation interviews, learning and pedagogical factors, and other issues presented by students. The team comments and recommendations are also included. In 1986 Dr. John Centra visited DLI with the intension of reviewing existing and proposed student opinion questionnaires and administration policies, and propose and recommended improvements in overall DLI procedures for soliciting, collecting, summarizing, and reporting studies opinion data regarding infrastructure and course effectiveness. Additional tasks included making recommendations regarding procedures and or personnel relevant to the formal evaluation of the Team Teaching concept, as well as making recommendations regarding a comprehensive system for faculty/staff evaluation under a merit based system. During the November 1983 GOSC meeting, a recommendation was made that Goodfellow conduct re-tests of the DLPT. The testing would be conducted under completion of the technical training to determine if there is a measurable change in language proficiency. The results note that there was some loss of proficiency by the end of the Goodfellow training as compared to the level of proficiency the graduates attained at DLIFLC. The full results of testing are included. The date range of these records is 1980-1987. |
