This box of the Studies and Reports Collection contains documents related to studies and reports on foreign language instruction in the Army and within the Department of Defense. Specific subjects consist of the House Appropriations Committee Investigation of Foreign Language Programs, the Department of Defense Appropriations, study on Modern Approaches to Foreign Language Training: A Survey of Current Practices, and Personnel Policy Implications - Increased Area Orientation and Language Training. The 1969 GAO report consists primarily of communications concerning the intent to conduct a survey to identify agencies within the Government having foreign language requirements and the various methods employed for training personnel to meet these needs. The survey itself is not included. Correspondence indicates that "no report would be submitted based on this survey." House Appropriations Committee Investigation of Foreign Language Programs of the Department of Defense includes extensive information provided to the Committee by DLI Headquarters regarding language programs FY 69 and FY 70. Requested information consists of the foreign language programs conducted by the DoD and military services, as well as a listing of the various languages taught an annual student output for each. Responses to this inquiry include costs of language training by military department for fiscal year 1969 through 1972, procedures used to determine how many individuals will be assigned to language training, the method used to select individuals for language training, etc. The 1972 Commander's Conference included fact sheets on training requirements, budget review, logistics, draft of DLI regulation 350-5, evaluation of project lists, reorganization of DCSPER, non-native hiring, civilian career program, qualification standards, graduate evaluation reports and course maintenance. The date range of these records is 1966-1972. |
