This box of the Verett Preservation Collection contains materials regarding historic preservation of Fort Ord and the National Park Services' (NPS) reading list on preserving historic building materials. The Historical and Architectural Documentation Reports for Fort Ord provides a historical overview of the post, as well as historic structures evaluation, including WWII temporary structures, Stilwell Hall, Martinez Hall, Building 2425 (vehicle maintenance shed - formerly coaster observation facility), east garrison buildings and other permanent buildings. Methodology and recommendations regarding each type of building are also outlined. The appendix includes HABS reports for Stilwell Hall, documentation reports and photos, condition reports, and a programmatic Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) regarding the WWII temporary buildings. Documentation related to Stilwell Hall consists of memos and correspondence from BRAC, DLIFLC (DPW), California State Parks, the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) and TRADOC on subjects such as Army liability, cost estimates for repairs versus demolition, repair options, reuse options, demolition, the murals, etc. The National Park Services' reading lists on preserving historic building materials is specific to wood, paint, masonry, concrete, and 20th century materials. Each type of material has its own section chapter with an introduction, history of the product, repair, manufacture and design, deterioration, treatments, application and reference materials.
